The largest ancient castle in the world (570 m long, on average 128 m wide, area 7.28 hectares), Prague Castle rises like a dream above the city of Prague offering beautiful views of the area below. It is situated on a hill on the left bank of the river Vltava connected to Prague Old Town with the magnificent Charles Bridge displaying the beautiful Prague panorama. On site there is the St. Vitus Cathedral with its lookout tower, the Castle Picture Gallery, several palaces and museums and the beautiful Royal Garden, among others. You can also watch the Presidential Guard, and the changeover of the guards on duty on the hour. Constructed in the 9th century by Prince Bořivoj, the castle transformed itself from a wooden fortress surrounded by earthen bulwarks to the imposing form it has today. The Prague castle has had four major reconstructions, but it keeps its classical face lift it took on in the 18 century during the reign of Maria Theresa. The castle has three courtyards and it has always been the seat of Czech rulers as well as the official residence of presidents.
