Czech Republic

The Czech Republic is a small landlocked country in Central Europe, situated southeast of Germany and bordering Austria to the south, Poland to the north and Slovakia to the southeast.

The Czech Republic covers an area of 78,866 square kilometers with mostly temperate continental climate. It is a unitary parliamentary republic, has 10.5 million inhabitants and the capital and largest city is Prague, with over 1.2 million residents. The Czech Republic includes its historical territories of Bohemia, Moravia, and Czech Silesia.

You can visit Czech Republic if traveling:

  • by plane (All of Europe's major airlines fly to the Czech Republic. Many of Europe's low cost airlines also fly to the country, including EasyJet, WizzAir, Ryanair, Germanwings, Norwegian, Jet2.com, SprintAir, SmartWings, and Air Berlin. ),
  • by train (International train service runs from most points in Europe to Prague, with some offering direct connections (without train changes) with Germany, Austria, Poland, Hungary, Belarus, and Russia. .),
  • by bus (It's a destination with a variety of bus services. Some of the best-known and reliable international bus companies provide service to the country like: Eurolines, RegioJet, LEO Express, PolskiBus, Flixbus, Lux Express, Ecolines, Hellö, Orangeways...) or,
  • by car (Drivers can enter the Czech Republic through a multitude of roads from its neighboring states. All checkpoints on its border crossings have been removed since the Czech Republic entered into the Schengen Agreement. There is a very good road access to the country).

There are a lot of accommodation in Czech Republic if you plan to travel to the country and stay for a holiday. Depending on your area of interests.

If you search for natural attractions, within the country are 4 national parks, each containing rich natural beauty.

  1. Krkonoše National Park - witch is one of the most famous and popular,
  2. Šumava National Park - encompassing a large area of the Bohemian Forest (one of the coldest areas of the country),
  3. Podyjí National Park - a forested land running along the deep Dyje River valley,
  4. České Švýcarsko National Park - home to the Pravčická brána, the largest natural arch in Europe.

The Czech Republic is a treasure jewel of castles, palaces, monasteries, and other places of historical significance. A complete listing of the country's castles and palaces is simply impossible.

As the country's capital city, Prague naturally dominates most visitors' itineraries, and for good reason. A mix of the Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Brutalist, and Socialist, the capital is arguably one of Europe's most photogenic cities.

Olomouc, the historical capital of Moravia, remains as one of the Czech Republic's best kept secrets, site of one of the largest old towns outside of Prague and the Holy Trinity Column, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in its own right.

The city of Pilsen, home to its famous style of beer, is a blue-collar city, although its city center is a mix of old and new, pleasant and unpretentious.

One important thing that is to be mentioned is Czech beer. Czechs will proudly say that it was in their country where modern beer (pivo) was invented. Czechs are the heaviest beer drinkers on Earth, consuming about 160 liters per capita a year.

Some well-known brands include: Pilsner Urquell, Budějovický Budvar, Staropramen, Gambrinus, Velkopopovický Kozel, Bernard, Radegast, Svijany, Starobrno, Krušovice, Dobřanská Hvězda.

Although many Czechs tend to be very selective about their beer brands, tourists usually don't find a significant difference.

Culture and history info

The Czech state was formed in the late 9th century as the Duchy of Bohemia under the Great Moravian Empire. After the fall of the Empire in 907, the center of power transferred from Moravia to Bohemia under the Přemyslid dynasty. In 1004, the duchy was formally recognized as part of the Holy Roman Empire, becoming the Kingdom of Bohemia in 1198 and reaching its greatest territorial extent in the 14th century. Besides Bohemia itself, the king of Bohemia ruled the lands of the Bohemian Crown, he had a vote in the election of the Holy Roman Emperor, and Prague was the imperial seat in periods between the 14th and 17th century. In the Hussite wars of the 15th century driven by the Bohemian Reformation, the kingdom faced economic embargoes and defeated five crusades proclaimed by the leaders of the Roman Catholic Church.
